The Sustainable Recycling Industries (SRI) program builds capacity for sustainable recycling in developing countries. The program is funded by the Swiss State Secretariat of Economic Affairs (SECO) and is implemented by Sofies in Egypt and Ghana and also did some smaller projects under the program in India which included stakeholder mapping, BFR plastic procurement and informal sector consultation. It improves local capacity for sustainable recycling together with private and public institutions, as well as the informal sector.
Sofies provides the following services:
Planning, design, and implementation of consultation sessions with informal recycling sector in Bangalore and Delhi (India). Bangalore consultation followed the format of a workshop and focus group discussion with formal SME e-waste recyclers, informal e-waste and end-of-life vehicle recyclers and metal traders and previously informal e-waste recyclers who had been formalised. Delhi consultations followed a face-to-face interview format with e-waste, lead acid battery and end-of-life vehicle recyclers.
Consolidating and analysing inputs on challenges and incentives for formalisation; describing worst practices and recommendations for improvements; Participation in stakeholder process for Guiding Principles for Secondary Metals
Establishing network with plastic recyclers and purchase of BFR-plastic (CRT monitor backs) for channelization to formal sector
