How to improve electronic waste recycling in Egypt?

As part of the Sustainable Recycling Industries (SRI) project, Sofies audited four electronic waste recyclers in Egypt. Legal and environmental compliance was verified according to an audit procedure based on the European WEEELABEX standard, and adapted by Sofies to the Egyptian context. Two Egyptian experts were also trained in this audit procedure.

These four recyclers in the Cairo region, who mainly recycle old computers from local companies, are committed to improving their processes to enable more environmentally friendly recycling and improve workplace health and safety.

The main challenge for these professional recyclers is to get enough old appliances to recycle. Large quantities of electronic waste are produced in Egypt, but this waste is mainly handled by the informal sector, which recycles at lower cost but in often precarious conditions.
