Beginning of October, Bangkok hosted two important events focused on sustainable industries: the final workshop of the global UNIDO Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) programme, and the Green Industry Conference. Both events highlighted the importance of developing eco-industrial parks (EIP) to improve resource efficiency and sustainability, especially in industrialising economies.
To support this development, practical tools have been developed, like the Implementation Handbook for Eco-industrial Parks
, published by UNIDO and reviewed by Prof. Suren Erkman, chairman of Sofies. Also, UNIDO, World Bank Group and GIZ jointly published an International Framework for EIP
, that aims to set international standards and promote EIP worldwide. On the field, this framework is being currently implemented in Vietnam by Sofies and its partner VNCPC in a World Bank Group (IFC) project.
All these initiatives and tools are a great step forward to mainstream EIP as the international standard for industrial development!
