At this year REPIC symposium in Fribourg, Sofies presented the results of the pyrolysis technology transfer program between Swiss partners and Viet Hien, a Vietnamese coffee processing equipment provider. Through this program a new pyrolysis technology was designed to suit the Vietnamese coffee industry.
Despite Vietnam’s leading global position in Robusta coffee exports, the sector is at risk. Because of changing weather patterns, Vietnamese farmers and processors face environmental and economic challenges like water shortage, soil degradation and income losses due to unreliable drying methods and inherent coffee quality and price decline. Pyrolysis technology turns coffee husks into biochar and energy for mechanical coffee drying. It is a climate smart solution to enhance coffee quality and soil fertility, while mitigating CO2 emissions.
