Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC)

Project dates

Phase I (2016-2019)

Context and objectives

The goal of the CapaCITIES project (under SDC’s Global Programme on Climate Change) is to strengthen the capacities of Indian city authorities to plan and implement measures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and for coping with the effects of climate change, both adaptation and mitigation in an integrated manner in key sectors.

The project is being implemented in four target cities namely Rajkot, Siliguri, Coimbatore and Udaipur, focusing on:

  • Climate change scenarios until 2035 and 2050 (including GHG inventory for four target cities) and climate risk impact assessments
  • City level implementation of resilient and sustainable management process in all 4 city administrations (Each city supported by Indian City Coaches jointly with Swiss Experts and introducing the European Energy Award methodology)
  • Climate resilient city action plans (time lines, identify size of projects-cost, identify financing models and potential linkages to financing etc.)
  • Pilot climate mitigation and adaptation measures (tentatively 2 per city in accordance with the priority measures of the city action plan)
  • Knowledge exchange and technical know-how between Indian cities and Swiss expertise through peer learning workshops, dialogue series, case studies, news briefs, best practices, building a knowledge hub, sectoral knowledge products and outreach activities
